Re: Way Confused about Version Numbers

Yes, any Debian 2.2 revision is Potato.
The Debian distribution published in a new revision every time there is a
major chunk of security updates that makes it worth publishing a new revision.

So 2.2Rev4 is the fourth Potato release with a bunch of security updates.

It is still the stable 2.2 (Potato) as no new functionality is added. Only
security have been fixed.

As for the kernel version, as the previous poster wrote that is the kernel
version - not the Debian version.

You need to think "set of packages" when you hear the word Debian, and "package"
when you hear the word kernel.
The kernel is just one package in the big set of packages that make up the
Debian distribution.

You are probably confused because currently the "official" Debian (Potato)
and the kernel have the same major and minor version numbers. They are both
2.2

This will change in the next major release of Debian.
Then the Debian distribution will be version 3.0 and the kernel package will
be version 2.4.

Cheers :o)
