While it looks like most of your questions have been answered, I'd like to
point out that there's a mailing list for questions and discussions
specifically related to CVS.  To subscribe, send mail to
info-cvs-request@gnu.org.  The usenet group comp.software.config-mgmt is
also relevant.

I don't follow either, but I used to subscribe to the mailing list; it was
often quite helpful as I was setting up some repositories and branching
policies at work.
