You didn't "turn it on"... you installed a display manager.  Since that
display manager is an X application, it starts up X.

So, you have two alternatives.  Either (a) remove the display manager, or
(b) do something to make sure it doesn't try to start.

If you don't want to use it, the easiest thing is to remove it.  If you
want it to stay, use update-rc.d to remove the init script that launches it
at boot.
