Karsten gave some good rules of thumb.

I currenlty have 2.4.10 on my desktop and 2.4.13 on my employer's
laptop. I haven't had any problems (other than my mis-configuration
of self-compiled kernel). I used to have 2.4.8 on both machines.

I also ran many 2.2 kernels with no trouble (2.2.11, 2.2.12,
2.2.18<pre?>, 2.2.19). 2.0 was on it's way out when I first started
with linux (2.0.36 on RH5..2) and I didn't use it long because that
distro didn't work with my video card. The next release (RH 6.[01])
had 2.2.<something> on it.
