Install a DM, like KDM.  Make the login something like 'house' with no
password.  KDM (and GDM) have the option of adding a shutdown menu right on the
login screen.  So your wife just hits 'Logout' then when KDM reappears she
chooses shutdown.  Not that different from windows.  I must be lucky, I have my
wife trained to type 'sudo halt'.
