Try installing the latest libaudiofile0 and libarts, that got sound
working for me. The maintainer, jor, told me on IRC that the problem I had
was stemming from the latest xine being built on these packages (and
maybe one more but I can't remember). Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, I already had the latest version of libaudiofile0, and I
tried upgrading to the sid version of libarts, no joy.  Purged and
reinstalled libxine0 and xine-ui, then reinstalled, just for good
measure.  Still no joy.  Any suggestions, anyone, or should I just go
back to regular old xine, which did have sound, but wasn't quite as
nice?
