You get the prize for right answer.  You have to hit <Space> when you
have highlighted the mailbox you want to see messages for (do *not* hit
<Return> to go to the mailbox).

Mutt's online help says:

<Space>   display-message     Display a message

Not real intuitive, at least to me.
