README.Debian says:
3) For mule binaries you must use "fontSet" rather than "font" in
Xresources to change the fonts used. For example:
Emacs*font: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-r-normal-*-10-*
becomes
Emacs*fontSet: -*-lucidatypewriter-medium-r-normal-*-10-*
perhaps you may give this a try.
