fte over ssh

I have a server which I can only get at via ssh

I would like to be able to use fte with it - so I have installed both the
fte-console and fte-terminal packages from debian woody.

HOWEVER, I don't get very far because the cursor movement keys do not seem to
function (the are interpreted by fte as weird combinations that put me into
menus, or execute menus).

Is there a way out of this?
