It sounds like you're being hit by a bug in xfree86-common that has
affected quite a few people lately.

Edit /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99xfree86-common_start and remove the quotes
around $REALSTARTUP.  It's a very quick fix; there's only a single line
in that file.
