Any help would be most appreciated. Do you have a "gateway" directive within the eth0 stanza in /etc/network/interfaces? If so, comment it out. When networking is restarted, a default route on eth0 will not be added. Another post already detailed how to remove the default route now (though it will come back when networking is restarted).
