Have you started the portmapper (/etc/init.d/portmap start) and
statd/lockd (/etc/init.d/nfs-common start) on both machines?  Have you
started nfsd (/etc/init.d/nfs-server (or nfs-kernel-server) start) on
the server?  On each machine, did you start the portmapper before any
of the other services?
