...or, do what I do, and use a *real* ftp client[1]:  lftp.

It uses largely similar syntax to a conventional ftp client, but
provides a minimal shell through which commands can be executed.  It
also does a few clever things like cache directory listings for servers,
respects multiple access methods (ftp, ftps, http, https), allows
backgrounding of downloads (including job control and backgrounding
downloads in progress for completion when you exit the client), and,
most importantly, reference an rc file so that settings (and commands)
can be run automajickally at startup.

Quite the slick tool.
