Anytime xmms has acted similarly with me, the first thing I
try is renaming my ~/.xmms dir and it's stored settings.
Usually that fixes it...

Short of that, have you updated xmms recently ?? Running SID,
this will happen on occassion. It may be a problem with the
latest version, although yours is the first post I've seen
about xmms in a while.
