I use dselect instead and don't know what aptitude would do if there is
a broken available file. But i had some trouble by using dselect on
Woody in the last weeks. Maybe the same cause?

Sometimes after making an update, dselect was not able to use dpkg. This
was, cause the file /var/lib/dpkg/available was not cleanly updated.
Some lines was broken and dselect was unable to read the package
 informations from there.

If this also happens an your Debian box, you only need to remove this
broken /var/lib/dpkg/available file and make a new update, to get a
better one. If this takes no effect try dselect. It tells you which
package infos are unreadeble in the available file. To know about this,
it is very easy to fix this trouble.

You only need to know the way and price.
