Gravis soundcard problem

I am running Debian unstable with Gnome installed.
I have a Gravis legacy soundcard installed, with
appropriate drivers enable.  When I try to run an
mp3 or midi file, I get the following error:

russ@p90:~/music$ splaymidi -g bohemian.mid

cannot get info on soundcard
/dev/sequencer: Device or resource busy

Can anyone offer advice?
