He's running on a 68040 Mac. It doesn't *have* a PCI bus, so there won't be a /proc/bus/pci/devices file at all. This is a bug in the stupid X configurator thing shipped with Debian. I had the same problem on an sbus based SPARC. Basically, the Debian configuration tools completely choke on non-PCI machines. I don't know anything at all about what X servers are available for m68k macs. However, there's a whole list devoted to using Debian on them: debian-m68k@lists.debian.org Try joining that list and asking questions there. The people there are likely to be more knowledgeable about the specific quirks related to m68k hardware.
