horrible harddrive performance

    Hey people.

My wife has become a Linux convert (woohoo!), but unfortunately I'm having
a problem getting decent performance out of her computer. She has a P-III 800,
which is faster than my 450, but the harddrive performance is a bottleneck on
her whole system. It's horribly slow.

The following is from the boot messages:

ALI15X3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 78
ALI15X3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
    ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
    ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
hda: FUJITSU MPF3102AT, ATA DISK drive
hdc: TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-M1402, ATAPI CDROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: FUJITSU MPF3102AT, 9773MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=1245/255/63
hdc: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache

Her harddrive is supposedly Ultra-DMA capable, but I got a bunch of errors
trying to get dma enabled with hdparm. Looks like it's still not set.

She has lots of swap space...

/dev/hda5 1 63 505984+ 82 Linux swap

    ...and a rockin' CPU...

Her mem stats look about the same as mine.

poohbear:/proc# free

But I can't get this sucker working properly.

poohbear:/proc/ide/ide0/hda# cat /proc/ide/ide0/hda/model

Any help getting some decent performance out of this thing?

    Much appreciated,

    Mike
