I have the same keyboard/mouse and it works with original bateries for
a long time (I can't remember when I bought it but it's been at least 6
month, probably almost a year). it performs very consistently (no need
for resetting etc.)

what I noticed is that in certain position they do not work, when I
move them just a little bit (20 cm) they work again (it's quite
consistent, it's not erratic, in one place they work, in another thery
work very poorly), so over time I have found a position for the base
where it works (for common positions of keyboard and mouse)

so you might try to experiment with location of the keyboard, mouse
and the base (the thing connected to computer).
