Well, to be honest, I never really read the whole README.  What I found
valuable from the doc was what needed to be installed, then the
quickstart (for those who are impatient):
make xconfig (or menuconfig)
make-kpkg clean
#Epoch:
make-kpkg --revision=3:custom.1.0 kernel_image

I add he epoch, so an apt-get update/upgrade doesn't try to replace my
new kernel
