  well, check the error messages.

  if that doesn't help, post the most important ones (usually the first
ones) and other relevant info here.

  also - how did you try to remove it? (there might be some more
'forceful' commands than the ones you used)

  btw why would you run install scripts from XFree86 download site? The
X 4.x is in debian and you can use the ttf straight out of the box
(don't even need the font server (if you don't want to serve fonts for
other machines))
