kernel problems with athlon + msi mboard

Hi,

This isn't specifically a debian problem, but having tried the non-debian
solution already without success I'm hoping for some suggestions here.
I have recently upgraded to a new system: MSI K7T Turbo mboard
(Via KT133A chipset) and 1.2GHz Athlon (266MHz FSB) cpu. When
I compile a kernel optimized for Athlon/Duron/K7, the new kernel
only partially boots, with different errors each time. However,
a kernel optimized for the K6 family (or anything generic) boots
without any trouble at all.

On the linux kernel mailing list, Alan Cox had a couple of remarks
about this back in July, saying that not all Via chipsets can deal
with the Athlon kernel doing streaming copies at full bus performance.
Supposedly, the official Via fixes have been applied since 2.4.6-ac5.
Someone also wrote in saying that upgrading the power supply fixed
the problem for his MSI + Athlon trouble.

Here are my other system details:

Power Supply: Antec 400W
Memory: 2 x 512MB PC133 SDRAM
Storage: Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller + 2 SCSI drives
Video: ATI Rage 128
NIC: Netgear FA310

OS: Debian unstable
Kernel: tried 2.4.8-ac5, 2.4.9-ac3, 2.4.9-ac5
gcc: 2.95.4
glibc:        /lib/libc.so.so6 -> libc-2.2.4.so

Let me know if I should post any other information, and thanks for
any suggestions!
