Indeed this looks like an X config problem.
Have you got /var/log/xdm.log ? It might show you what is wrong. Perhaps you 
want to post it here.
I guess that posting your /etc/X11/XF86Config might help as well.
Have you tried <ctrl><alt><num pad minus> 1 or 2 times in order to change the 
display resolution?
