sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but:

the lexmark Z series are totally useless in linux. they rely heavily on 
windows drivers to control them. this is good for the windows user because 
the drivers handle a lot of  the printers functions (like Linus Torvalds new 
CPU that uses software to run stuff)       and lower the price of the printer 
but, they don't have any drivers that work w/ debian and they won't release 
info on the drivers b/c then other companies could imitate them and make 
cheap printers like theirs.
lexmark optras are fine, but by all accounts, i'd go with an epson or hp 
printer as i hear they are the best for linux compatibility.  Now, if you're 
bound and determined to make your Z series work, lexmark has released some 
linux drivers, but they only work with certain versions of redhat and 
mandrake.  
I'd just get a new printer though, my Z series broke after 6 months of 
not-too-intensive windows use anyway.
