Ok, your modem is fine. All you need to do is figure out how to
authenitcate with your ISP. My recomendation is to use minicom to
manually dial and work through the prompts your ISP sends back and the
proper response you should send to them. This is essential. Then
edit the chat script (probably /etc/chatscripts/provider but I can't
find the right file on this system and it would take a long time to
boot the 486 that does the dialing, this box has ADSL now) to contain
these "expect-send" pairs.
Since your modem works all you need to do is configure the dial-up
authentication (which is done using chat) and pppd (you may need to
provide a user/password for PAP). The other programs (eg wvdial,
pppconfig, etc) all try and make this easier, but I like to get right
into it and see exactly what is happening so that I can make it work
right. BTW I have never seen Debian fail to connect except when (a) I
screwed up the chatscript or (b) the ISP's server went down and
refused to authenticate. MS Windows on the other hand ...
