You might want to try out

It's a protocol independent (except it uses TCP, but independent in case of
HTTP pr FTP or similar) pure net I/O testing tool.
In 'bin' directory are binaries for linux, nt (9x too), old DOS, OS/2 and SCO.
All work both as server and client.
Makefiles / Sources are included as well.
I don't know it's origin location, I fetched it from a CD in a german computer
magazine called c't. The author is Kai Uwe Rommel and it's only a contact
e-mail, no URL, given.
