PCMCIA Nightmare

Hi, I'm trying to get my PCMCIA card working with the PCMCIA package. it's an 
SMC Network Card. It used to work, before I did a reinstall of Debian. 
Whenever I try to install the package, I get an error saying it needs kernel 
image 2.2.19 version something-9. I installed 2 before I knew I needed 9 and 
now whenever I try to install version 9, the PCMCIA package still says either 
that 2 is still installed and it needs 9, or that 9 is not installed. I've 
tried to uninstall it using dselect but it keeps giving me this crap. Does 
anyone know what I should do?
