Does ...

$ xlsfonts "*helvetica*"

yield lines like:

-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--20-140-100-100-p-100-iso10646-1

??

If not, you need to configure your Xserver or font server or both to
look for fonts in the appropriate directories.

BTW, there should be no need to have both 75dpi and 100dpi fonts.
