How to update/upgrade libc6?

I am running Debian 2.2r3, and need to update/upgrade libc6 from
2.1.3-19 to 2.2.3-5 in order to get USB support on my box (hotplut,
modutils, usbutils etc).  How do I do that without messing up the system
and lose password files etc?
