I installed ess, when I do `M-x R' it prompts for a directory and
then kinda hangs there.  Is that what you mean?  (I'm not sure
since I've never used it).

I could get out of it by pressing Control-G.

The ESS mailing list is your best bet.  They will have to support
emacs21 eventually!
