gdm and xdm question

I recently added a usb-mouse to a Linux box and decided to do a clean
reinstall with an unofficial woody image, and an upgrade to the 2.4.6
kernel. (This turned out to be much more difficult than just doing a
dist-upgrade to testing from potato that I had done on another
computer). Anyway, the mouse works great and XFree86 appears to be
configured correctly (I think..). The gdm menu pops up fine, but if I
try to open gnome the screen goes black and then returns to the login
menu (gdm). I am only using debian sources (not Ximian, Progeny, or
the others), and seem to be missing something. I did an apt-get install
of gnome-core, gnome-control-center, gnome-admin, and sawmill-gnome
I tried with xdm as well...the screen also goes black on login. Any
hints on where to proceed?
Thanks,
Glen
