Is there some specific reason that you don't want libncurses4? It is specifically listed as a dependency in nvi's meta-data. It's quite possible that nvi really does need that version of the library. There is no harm in having both versions installed at once. You may wish to install vim, which is an enhanced version of vi. It does not require libncurses4, but version 5.
