netstat -lAinet | grep smtp

which is better since it gives a more certain answer whether the smtp
port is bound to, or not. also, telnet is a protocol, and *if* you
test things like that, at least use netcat, dude! :)

under certain circumstances, fetchmail will refuse to accept any mail
unless /etc/hosts contains both its hostname and localhost on the
127.0.0.1 line.
