Doesn't help with the 2.4.x packages. They need the initrd to get the
necessary drivers.
The "linux single" is a good tip, however, for those who don't know about
it. In this case, however, it won't work because it still expects the root
filesystems ( as does my preferred "linux init=/bin/bash" ).
Booting from install CD, however, gives you a shell on the 2nd virtual
terminal ( <alt>-F2 ), and fdisk can be run from there. I've had to do that
just a few times :).
