You're not talking about the gdm login box, are you? If it's some program that's running that asks for your password, you should find out what it is (and probably not give it your password until you do. Does it prevent you from performing other tasks? If not, you could try 'xwininfo' and 'ps ux' to try to get clues as to what it might be. Does it have a window title? If you're not getting anywhere at all, try looking at the output of 'ps awux' while it's running, then destroy the window and see if any process is no longer listed in 'ps awux'. Your question is really too vague to be able to give a solid answer. What exactly does the box say?
