Well... it does... I did set up a symbolic link to . (boot -> .)
I've also tried doing
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmliuz-2.4.5 root=/dev/hda3 single
I'll try it again tonight... but I'm sure I've exhausted every possible
combination.
I'm also sure it IS something as simple as this...

I could use some clarification on this one point:
Under GRUB 'root" (as in root (hd0,0)) means exactly what?
I am assuming it DOES NOT mean what drive is going to endup being / (root)
once the OS is running but rather the root of all GRUB operations. Is this
true?
What is the significant difference between:
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.5 root=/dev/hda3 single
and:
root (hd0,2)
kernel (hd0,0)/vmlinuz-2.4.5 root=/dev/hda3 single
