You probably want to keep gdm -- it s the login dialog yo usee when
you have X run at boot time.  You could remove it, then try and add it
back later.

I don't know how to fix it, but to remove it try 

    apt-get remove --force gdm

that may try and remove other stuff too, I don't know.
