It's called xdm.  You can remove it completely, if you don't 
like it.  Use dselect.  After that, you can still start x windows 
manually with the "startx" command.

Alternatively, you can read the xdm documentation ("man xdm",
"cd /usr/share/doc/xdm; ls -l; eval `lesspipe`; less *") and
disable the starting of an xserver on the local display.

But I think you just want to get rid of it.
