My guess would be that you are not in the source directory.  cd to

/usr/src/linux 

or wherever you unpacked your kernel-source.  I use

/var/tmp/build/kernel-source-[version]

to build my kernel-image packages so I don't have to be root to build 
them, but others may choose differently.
