Simple.  You set dselect's access method to "apt" in dselect.

Then you run "update" in dselect.  It makes apt do all the exepcted
things, and updates dpkg's available packages database as well, which
is where dselect gets its information from.  It will also ensure that
"dpkg -p $pkgname" will work as expected.
