Thanks for your help. I have installed the xlibs-dev

rhone:/usr/local/src/pango/gtk+# dpkg -l | grep xlib

ii  xlibmesa3 4.0.3-4        XFree86 version of Mesa 3D graphics library

and the configure command I gave was

./configure --x-includes=/usr/X11R6/include/X11
--x-libraries=/usr/X11R6/lib/

but the results is the same

checking for XOpenDisplay in -lX11... no
configure: error: *** libX11 not found. Check 'config.log' for more
details.
