Check out the initrd-tools package in testing/unstable. It allows you
to create an initrd image which loads the modules needed to mount the
root filesystem. It requires a 2.4 kernel with cramfs (which was
introduced around 2.4.2).
I tried it, but I discovered I couldn't use it: LVM needs a writeable
initrd file system.
