That is not true. My home gateway machine is setup to do firewalling and
masquerading using IPTables with kernel 2.4.2. My kernel configuration
for that system has module support disabled completely. All IPTables
options that I need have been compiled into the kernel, and I have had
zero problems getting IPTables to work without module support in the
kernel.
