in your .vimrc enter / uncomment:

  " set indent to c indent if editing c-files
augroup C
  autocmd BufRead *.c set cindent
augroup END

  " if vim was compiled with +syntax enable syntax hightlighting by default
if has("syntax")
  syntax on
endif

set tabstop=2
set expandtabs

this expands tabs (which is a good idea IMHO) and sets stop to 2.

There is a asm.vim - Syntax file. There may be a better asm Mode I don't
know about (never been there).
