compiling kernel 2.4.4 in potato

After following the instructions on the debian webiste to use a 2.4 kernel on potato, everything installed fine.
I then unpacked the kernel. ran through the options did
make dep;make clean
Everything ok when I try make bzImage
I get

gcc: Internel compile error: program cc1 got fatal signal 4
make[2]: *** [locks.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.4/fs'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.4/fs'
make: *** [_dir_fs] Error 2
il500:/usr/src/linux# {standard input}: Assembler messages:
{standard input}:0: Warning: end of file not at end of line; new line inserted
cpp: output pipe has been closed

This doesn't mean much to me and don't know how to fix it.
