You must be compiling source tarball.

Get source from latest unstable (if there is .diff, get them) then use
debian packaging command to compile.  For ghostscript, you may have to
get other packages to get it compiling.

# dpkg-source -x ??????.dsc    # un-archive and patch
# dpkg-buildpackage ....       # build pakage

READ the packaging-manual.

I recommends to get existing package compile first before venturing into
latest source.  :-)
