mutt, email and ssl: SSL is unavailable.

I have the following setting in mutt:

set folder="{localhost/ssl}mail"

  I start mutt and it says:

SSL is unavailable.

  is there anything I have to do to enable ssl? Since the description of
mutt package says it supports ssl I thought it would work right away.
There is no separate mutt-ssl package...

  this is what package description says:

  o Advanced IMAP client supporting Kerberos authentication (and in some
    situations SSL encryption).

  BTW: I can access the same server using ssl from netscape (at least I
think it uses ssl, I specified it in mail server properties and it asks
to confirm the certificate)
