I'm not quite sure what the question is here.  Yes you can have a
windows/linux network.  Take a look at the "Samba" package.  

You might want to take a look at http://linux.com/ and or do a search 
for linux on the web and read about it.  Maybe someone else here will 
understand what your asking.  If your trying to decide which distro 
there was a distro HOWTO but seems to be pulled you might want to
