alsa et al

I seem to be having quite a few problems. Bloody hell, I knew that the
transition from Mandrake wouldn't be painless; still, I didn't expect this.

Alsa source code doesn't want to compile. Tells me it needs the kernel source 
to
be present in one of the directories; scoobied if I know what to do with it. 
The
potato distro .deb packet with the driver is too old and my card isn't in.

And it also seems I can't get the hang of apt-get... how does one make it work
for individual packages?
