I would start by verifying that this file exists and has a reasonable
contents:

[01:32:50 tmp]$ ls -l /var/lib/dpkg/status*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 945859 Apr 30 01:08 /var/lib/dpkg/status
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 945991 Apr 30 01:07
/var/lib/dpkg/status-old
[01:33:34 tmp]$ head /var/lib/dpkg/status
Package: gnushogi
Status: purge ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: games

Package: offix-editor
Status: purge ok not-installed
Priority: optional
Section: utils

[01:33:41 tmp]$
